Spinning a century's tale.
The beginning of Niseko's story.
Emerging from Niseko
Japan’s northernmost* cotton brand

Once thriving, Japan’s cotton industry has nearly vanished, with selfsufficiency falling below 0.1 per cent. This rarity makes pure domestic cotton highly valued.
NISEKO SNOW COTTON draws on the beauty and natural qualities of cotton as pure as snow to create lifestyle items that embody the spirit of Niseko. From the world-renowned ski resort town of Niseko, NISEKO SNOW COTTON shares a new facet of the town’s charm — as soft and pristine as its famous powder snow.

COTTON STORY
Niseko is known as one of Hokkaido’s snowiest regions, where thick winter snow covers the fields, making farming impossible during the colder months. Yet, even in winter, we sought ways to stay connected to the land and contribute to our community. After many years of reflection, we discovered cotton cultivation.
Cotton fits perfectly alongside our melon crops, with non-overlapping harvest seasons. It can be stored long-term and processed during the quiet winter months. Most importantly, fields of cotton, with their snowy-white bolls, reflect the beauty of Niseko’s winter landscapes.
Thanks to our deep experience growing Niseko melons, we began trial cotton cultivation in 2023. Through careful trial and error over three years, we’ve developed a cultivation method suited to this unique northern climate, making us Japan’s northernmost cotton growers.

Cotton threads woven from Tōhoku to Niseko
Commercial cotton cultivation in Hokkaido had never been attempted before, and everything has been trial and error.
Our first challenge was sourcing cotton seeds. We were fortunate to receive guidance and seeds from producers in Miyagi Prefecture, which marked the start of our journey. With ongoing support from leading cotton companies and organisations in Japan, we established cultivation techniques in Hokkaido and created the NISEKO SNOW COTTON brand.
No words can truly express our gratitude. We sincerely thank all who have supported us.

Spinning new possibilities
from Japan’s northernmost* land
NISEKO SNOW COTTON was developed together with the people of Niseko as a new local specialty. Our goal is to build a Made in NISEKO cotton brand that is loved locally, nationally, and internationally.
Cotton is an ecological resource whose fibres, branches, stems, and seeds can all be fully utilised. Through collaboration with a wide range of businesses and community events, we are committed to promoting both regional revitalisation and sustainable agriculture.

Japan’s northernmost* commercial cotton farming

"Absolutely impossible in Hokkaido."
Cotton cultivation has long been considered unsuitable for cold regions such as Hokkaido, where short growing seasons and heavy snowfall make open-field farming difficult.
However, recent climate changes, combined with Niseko’s expertise in melon cultivation, have paved the way for successful cotton farming here, extending Japan’snorthernmost limit beyond Miyagi (*).
NISEKO SNOW COTTON begins cultivation by germinating seeds in temperature-controlled greenhouses to ensure optimal growth.
As cotton requires ample water and Hokkaido lacks a rainy season, irrigation systems are used to regulate moisture levels in the fields. This approach closely mirrors the methods traditionally employed in melon farming, a convergence that feels both natural and meant to be, enabling cotton cultivation to flourish in this cold northern climate.

Embracing cold climate rhythms
Japan’s cotton self-sufficiency rate is almost zero, meaning that nearly all cotton is imported.
Overseas, cotton cultivation is often carried out on a large scale, with frequent use of pesticides to prevent disease and pests.
It is also said that pesticides are sometimes applied at harvest to wither the leaves, allowing for the efficient collection of large quantities of cotton.
NISEKO SNOW COTTON, however, applies pest control only when necessary and cultivates cotton as naturally as possible.
When exposed to frost, the leaves naturally wither and the cotton bolls open quickly, enabling harvest without pesticides by harnessing this unique cold-climate cycle.
By drawing on advanced agricultural skills, we have established a method of cotton cultivation truly suited to Hokkaido’s environment.

An Initiative Weaving Together Past and Place
Niseko is an internationally renowned ski resort celebrated for its rich cultural diversity.
Beyond tourism, accommodation, and dining, the region is home to a variety of unique businesses, including agriculture, forestry, dairy farming, artists, creators, and cosmetic manufacturers, all closely connected to Niseko’s natural environment.
Cotton is an eco-friendly material that makes full use of its fibres, branches, stems, and seeds. NISEKO SNOW COTTON collaborates with local businesses on product development and events to promote regional revitalisation and sustainable farming, representing a new Made in Niseko initiative.

First Products
NISEKO SNOW COTTON is a material that can be crafted not only from cotton fibres but also from branches, stems, and seeds.
By making the most of these qualities, we aim to develop a wide range of products that will become the Niseko standard. Moving forward, we strive to be a comprehensive brand that conveys Niseko’s nature, culture, and stories, bringing the spirit of Niseko to life.
